What Newcastle United CEO David Hopkinson was surprised by when taking over club

Posted on November 28, 2025 by Jsport

David Hopkinson’s Newcastle United revolution is well underway as we’ve already seen several high-profile people exit the club following his 100-day review announcement.

We definitely get the distinct impression that Hopkinson isn’t here to mess about and anyone at the club who has been coasting has just a few more weeks to buck their ideas up or get out.

At the same time, it sounds like Hopkinson is making changes to the organisational structure of the club with several job adverts going live since his appointment.

Craig Hope has now revealed that Hopkinson is looking to appoint a strategy executive, something he was reportedly shocked wasn’t already an existing position at the club.

Newcastle are looking to appoint a strategy executive

In his Newcastle Confidential column, Hope states that the strategy executive will work with the board and the footballing side of the business to deliver special projects on time and within budget.

That ‘one time’ part would certainly be a novel idea, given just how long we’ve been waiting for any kind of word on a new stadium.

Chief Operating Officer Brad Miller was brought in for that very purpose, and I think he’s been pretty much silent since the first week he arrived at the club.

Are we finally getting some forward momentum on the new stadium?

We understand that there’s been a lot of upheaval behind the scenes, which will have affected progress, but all we are asking is for someone from the club to come out and say as much.

Newcastle fans pump millions of pounds into the club, and they shouldn’t have to launch campaigns every other week for transparency. The club should have open lines of communication and deliver progress updates, even when they aren’t ones we particularly want to hear.

Instead, we just have thousands of people asking ‘what’s going on with the stadium’ when a simple announcement would park those questions. It’s just common sense.

At least this new position suggests that there’s some sort of forward momentum when it comes to the new stadium. At least, we assume that the new hire will be involved in that, who knows at this point?
