Newcastle set to be offered £20m bargain – A January gem to fix problem position?

Newcastle Could Be Offered a £20m January Bargain – A Winger Who Could Fix a Growing Problem

After a run of flat, unconvincing attacking displays this season, it’s becoming increasingly clear that Eddie Howe may need to strengthen in January — particularly in the wide areas.

For all Newcastle’s hard work and structure, the final third has too often lacked punch. Aside from the occasional dangerous delivery from Jacob Murphy, the wing play has been inconsistent. Harvey Barnes has struggled to find rhythm, Anthony Gordon’s form has been unpredictable, and Anthony Elanga has yet to justify his hefty £50 million move from Nottingham Forest.

The end result? Not enough threat, not enough creativity, and too many games drifting by without sustained attacking pressure. With that in mind, reinforcements out wide are starting to feel less like a luxury and more like a necessity.

Oscar Bobb Enters Newcastle’s Thinking

According to The Chronicle’s Lee Ryder, Manchester City winger Oscar Bobb has emerged as a potential target for Newcastle as the Norwegian faces an uncertain future at the Etihad Stadium.

Reports suggest a deal in the region of £20 million could be possible in January, although Newcastle would face competition. Borussia Dortmund are believed to be monitoring the situation closely, with a loan move also under discussion.

At City, opportunities have been limited. With Rayan Cherki shining, Phil Foden in excellent form, and Jeremy Doku continuing to develop, competition for places in Pep Guardiola’s squad is fierce. That congestion has inevitably restricted Bobb’s minutes, and his pathway to regular football may narrow further if Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo completes a move to Manchester.

A Familiar Threat to Newcastle Fans

Newcastle supporters won’t need reminding of Bobb’s quality. The winger delivered one of his most memorable Premier League moments at St James’ Park, scoring a dramatic stoppage-time winner in a thrilling 3–2 defeat for the Magpies a few seasons ago.

That cameo offered a glimpse of his composure, technical ability, and confidence in high-pressure moments — traits Newcastle have often lacked in wide areas this season.

Why Another Winger Makes Sense

Beyond current form, there are longer-term considerations. Jacob Murphy is approaching 31, Barnes turns 28 this year, and Gordon’s future remains uncertain amid ongoing interest from Liverpool and Arsenal.

Elanga, meanwhile, is badly out of form, and Newcastle cannot afford for such a key area of the pitch to remain underperforming.

Adding a younger winger with pace, flair, and upside would not only improve competition but also help future-proof the squad as Newcastle continue to push for consistency at the top end of the Premier League.

A Rare Exception Worth Making?

Ordinarily, there is understandable caution around signing players Pep Guardiola is prepared to let go. Newcastle’s recruitment strategy has often been more successful when identifying talent outside the Premier League spotlight.

However, Oscar Bobb may be an exception.

Still only in his early twenties, he is widely regarded as one of Europe’s most talented young wide players when fit and trusted with regular minutes. Injuries and squad depth — rather than a lack of ability — have slowed his progress at City.

If Newcastle can secure him for around £20 million, it could prove to be one of the smarter pieces of business of the January window.

With the right environment and consistent game time, Bobb has all the tools to become exactly what Newcastle’s attack has been missing.
