Hearts Striker Lawrence Shankland’s Secret C0ntract Clause Exp0sed After Joining Rangers

Lawrence Shankland today completed his move from Hearts to Rangers after signing a two-year contract with a one-year option at Ibrox. Rangers negotiated a quick deal with the striker after activating a break clause in the three-year contract he signed at Tynecastle Park last summer. That allowed him to leave Hearts without a transfer fee and he has now secured his future in Glasgow after four years in Edinburgh.

Shankland, 30, begins World Cup preparations with Scotland this week having finished the season with 21 goals in 36 games for club and country. He captained Hearts during an enthralling Premiership title challenge, which ended in disappointment last weekend when a 3-1 defeat at Celtic Park saw Celtic win the league by two points.

Shankland was ushered off the pitch by stewards at the end as a mass pitch invasion led to concerns over his and other players’ safety. He scored Hearts’ goal earlier in a game which proved to be his final act in a maroon shirt. The move to Rangers transpired quickly and moved at rapid pace over the weekend, leading to Shankland putting pen to paper at Ibrox after completing a medical.

Hearts will now seek a replacement for their skipper, but supporters are unhappy that the club captain has gone to a rival club for free. Shankland and his representatives negotiated for months last year before he signed his three-year Hearts contract – which would not have happened without the break clause enabling him to leave this summer. Tynecastle officials agreed to it knowing he could bring them success in season 2025/26. His goals helped the club secure a place in the Champions League’s second qualifying round this July after they finished second in the Premiership for the first time in 20 years.

Hearts issued a short statement confirming Shankland’s departure, which read: “Heart of Midlothian can confirm that Lawrence Shankland is leaving the club to join Rangers. The striker will make the move to Ibrox on undisclosed terms once the summer transfer window opens on June 15th. We thank Lawrence for all of his efforts during his four years in Gorgie.”

Shankland arrived in the Capital from the Belgian side Beerschot in summer 2022 and wasted no time endearing himself to the Hearts support. His goalscoring exploits saw him become the most lethal centre-forward No.9 the club had seen in decades. He recorded 88 goals in 171 competitive games throughout the last four seasons, becoming the first Hearts striker to score more than 20 goals in a campaign since John Robertson.

He was appointed captain in December 2022 following goalkeeper Craig Gordon’s double leg-break. Since then, Shankland has been a hugely influential figure and helped drive the club’s title challenge this season. His exit is the first of the summer, but several more first-team players are also expected to move on.

Tynecastle officials are preparing for changes to the squad this summer with several players out of contract, including Cammy Devlin, Beni Baningime, Frankie Kent, Craig Gordon and Alan Forrest. St Johnstone winger Josh McPake has signed a pre-contract to join Hearts for next season, and French midfielder Tom Renaud has committed his future to the club.

Hearts are keen to sign defenders MJ Kamson-Kamara and Malachi Fagan-Walcott from Lincoln City and York City respectively. They are also interested in the Falkirk winger Calvin Miller as a player who could provide additional creativity in the final third. Should a transfer for Shankland materialise, there would need to be a replacement for the 30-year-old to reinforce the forward line for next season.

For Rangers, the signing represents a major statement ahead of the new campaign as they continue reshaping the squad in pursuit of domestic success and a stronger European challenge. Shankland’s experience in Scottish football, combined with his proven goalscoring record, makes him one of the most reliable forwards in the country. Rangers supporters will be hoping he can immediately replicate the form he displayed at Hearts and become a key figure at Ibrox.

The move also adds extra intrigue to next season’s Premiership title race. Shankland has regularly troubled Rangers and Celtic defenses during his time at Hearts, and now he will have the opportunity to play alongside a higher calibre of teammates while competing for trophies on multiple fronts. Expectations will naturally be high given his reputation and the excitement surrounding the transfer.

Meanwhile, Hearts fans are left reflecting on the end of an era for one of the club’s modern icons. Despite frustrations over the circumstances of his exit, many supporters acknowledge the enormous contribution he made during his spell in Edinburgh. His leadership, goals, and memorable performances ensured his name will remain highly regarded among the Tynecastle faithful for years to come.
