Celtic make move for England international striker

Posted on January 16, 2026 by Jsport

Half the January transfer window is now gone. It would be an understatement to say that the Celtic board have disappointed with their lack of activity so far. With the pressure on, the fans had been hoping for some urgency and quick signings this winter, in hopes of turning the season around. Instead, the only addition that has been until now is the loan deal for Julian Araujo from Bournemouth for the rest of the campaign. He had made just one appearance for the Cherries in 25/26.

The club do seem to be stepping up their pursuit of a striker lately. They have been linked with a variety of names, including Mohamed Bamba of FC Lorient, Kyogo of Birmingham City, Franko Kovacecvic of Celje, David Datro Fofana of Chelsea and Andrej Ilic of Union Berlin.

Now, another name has been added to that list. And it would be a high-risk, high-reward kind of move, if Celtic are able to pull it off.

As reported by Ben Jacobs, Celtic have made an approach for Callum Wilson. It is exploratory at this stage to understand his appetite to join and wage expectations. The English striker and West Ham United could agree a mutual termination.

What Celtic need right now is a consistent goalscorer. And as far as that goes, it is hard to imagine that the Hoops can find much better than Wilson.

The issue is not with Wilson’s quality though. It is with his fitness. He has managed to play more than 30 games in a season just once since 2020. In that campaign, he scored 18 times in 31 Premier League outings for Newcastle United, which goes to show how good he can be when injury-free.

If Wilson can remain fit, he would not have a tough time finding the back of the net for Celtic, especially with the number of chances that have gone unfinished this season. That being said, it is easy to understand why the Hoops might be reluctant to make a move for him, after seeing how things have turned out for Kelechi Iheanacho since joining.

The best-case scenario might be Celtic signing Wilson alongside another striker, who is younger and has a much better fitness record. In the situation, handing him a short-term deal would not be a bad idea. But is the English international even open to joining the Hoops?
