The former Celtic player has made a return to Parkhead, as the club strengthen Martin O’Neill’s ranks.
Martin O’Neill deserved immense credit for taking Celtic’s call in an hour of need, twice in quick succession, when he had been retired from management for all intents and purposes. The Northern Irishman was the one to replace Brendan Rodgers, after he resigned from his post earlier in the season, and took an unperforming team to seven wins out of eight games.
For some reason, the club decided that it was a good idea to show O’Neill the exit door, when the team was in such good form under him and brought in Wilfried Nancy before the Scottish League Cup final. It cost them silverware as well as their grip on the league title race.
Since then, Nancy has been sacked, and O’Neill has been brought back. This time around, he has been handed the job until the end of the season.
It is pretty clear that O’Neill likes to work with a coaching staff that he knows well from his first spell at the club. And now, another such name is set to be added to that list.
Confirmed: Former Celtic player makes Parkhead return
As reported by The Scottish Sun, Celtic have appointed Michael McGovern to their coaching staff. He will work across the B team and the first team.
McGovern came through the youth ranks at Celtic. He was never able to establish himself in the first-team picture though. After a couple of loan spells away, he would end up leaving the club in 2008, joining Dundee United.
He would end up having a bit of a journeyman career, turning out for a number of clubs across Scotland. He even played for Norwich City down in England. Since then, he has retired from the game and is now getting into the coaching scene, with the Hoops giving a chance to the former academy Bhoy.
