Anthony Joseph has confirmed a £4.1m transfer after Celtic fail to strike a deal for the player.
It has been a difficult window for Celtic, with the Hoops not managing to get a permanent signing through the door as of yet. News doesn’t get much better for supporters either, as O’Neill’s side is set to miss out on another target, with Damir Redzic agreeing a deal with Red Bull Salzburg worth £4.1 million.
It was reported by the Daily Record on Friday that the Hoops had tried to intercept the deal with a bid of £3.5 million. Talks for the “massive talent” seemed to be off the ground, but Celtic are now out of the race, with Anthony Joseph reporting that Redzic is travelling to undergo a medical tomorrow.
The 22-year-old has been a standout performer for Dunajska Streda this season, managing eight goal involvements in 14 appearances. He also made his debut for the Hungarian national team in their 3-2 defeat to Ireland.
O’Neill admitted to journalists after Celtic’s win against Utrecht that suggestions of Redzic weren’t “a million miles away”. Fans were excited at the prospect of bringing in a quick, exciting winger but now, Hoops supporters will have to settle for whoever we manage to get through the door.
Celtic agree deal for £3 million winger
The welcome news is that Celtic will still be bringing in a winger, with a deal now struck for Lorient winger Joel Mvuka. The move will be the most expensive incoming Scottish Premiership transfer this window.
The support is split on the decision. While some are excited about his potential, others are labelling him “tragic”. It’s undeniable that his current form isn’t great, but there is still plenty of time for him to prove his worth.
With Celtic sitting in second, tied on points with Rangers and trailing Hearts by six, incomings were necessary. Celtic are still looking to improve their centre-back options, with the hope that Stephen Welsh will return to Motherwell. Whether they will manage to increase their defensive options this late into the window remains to be seen.
