Fabian Schar is always going to be in the conversation for most value for money signing in Premier League history, signing for Newcastle United for just £3 million in 2018.
Rafa Benitez brought the Swiss international to the club, and the, let’s be honest here, lads, bloody stunning individual, did a fine job for the Spaniard, but under Steve Bruce, the man who wouldn’t know talent if it slapped him in the face, he disappeared from the starting lineup.
Eddie Howe brought Schar back from the brink, and he repaid Howe’s faith with top performance after top performance, sprinkling in a few world-class goals for good measure.
Schar’s goal against Tottenham on Wednesday was his 22nd for the club, making him the fourth-highest scoring defender in the club’s history.

As happens to us all, though, Fabian Schar isn’t getting any younger and Newcastle have had to account for that, bringing in Malick Thiaw as his long-term replacement, but a couple of blows to the head saw Schar drop out of the starting XI and Malick Thiaw has seized his opportunity with both hands.
As a result, Schar’s appearances have been limited lately, and with his latest contract due to expire next year, there’s a fear that the Magpies could lose him.
However, Schar has spoken before about his desire to see out his career on Tyneside, and the defender spoke to The Chronicle this week and it seems nothing has changed.
Fabian Schar is open to staying at Newcastle
Fabian Schar told The Chronicle that he’s still open to contract talks to extend his stay.
“I have said before I feel at home here. I know in football you never know what happens and it goes quick.
“If that’s something that can happen, that would be good. I would be open to it of course.
“We need to see what the situation is and what happens in the next few weeks.
“I will just try to show what I can do with my quality, and the rest we will see.”
