Anthony Gordon has admitted he wants ‘more’ at Newcastle United as he looks to bounce back from an injury setback.
Anthony Gordon joined Newcastle United from Everton in January 2023 for £45million and has gone on to score 26 goals in 119 appearances for the club.
The 24-year-old has had a somewhat contrasting start to the season with four goals and an assist in four Champions League games but without a goal contribution domestically. In fact, Gordon hasn’t scored or assisted a goal in the Premier League for Newcastle since January.
The winger missed Newcastle’s 3-1 defeat at Brentford due to injury as well as the subsequent international break with England. He was initially named in the squad alongside his Magpies teammates Dan Burn and Nick Pope but was forced to withdraw due to a hip problem.
Pope also withdrew due to a concussion picked up at Brentford but is expected to be back in contention for the match against Manchester City at St James’ Park on Saturday (5:30pm kick-off). Gordon has scored in each of Newcastle’s previous two Premier League matches at home to Man City but is officially a doubt for the match despite his injury being described by head coach Eddie Howe as ‘minor’.

Gordon has won the Carabao Cup and qualified for the Champions League twice since joining Newcastle less than three years ago. Aside from his recent injury, he is also an England regular heading into a World Cup year.
But as Newcastle’s 2023/24 Player of the Season looks to get back to his best levels for his club, he couldn’t hide his ambitions.
“I’d say I’m really comfortable around the place, comfortable around the city,” Gordon admitted, having signed a new long-term contract last season. “I’m settled, my family are settled, my little boy goes to nursery. That side of life is really settled, but as a footballer I’ll never be settled.
“I’ll never feel content with where I’m at. I’ll always want more like I said before. I’ll always feel like I can do more.
“I’ve had a good start to my Newcastle career, but I want more. I want to be better than I have been for the last two years. I want to achieve more here.
“I want to win more trophies here, play consistently in the Champions League. I’m really settled as a person, a human being off the field. But on the field I’ve got so much more to do here.”

Newcastle have just had their busiest summer transfer window to date with a record spend to bring in Nick Woltemade, Yoane Wissa, Anthony Elanga, Aaron Ramsdale, Malick Thiaw and Aaron Ramsey while also securing a Premier League record sale of £130million for Alexander Isak to join Liverpool.
The Magpies have had a disjointed start to the season as a result, reflected by the side sitting 14th in the Premier League table while flying high in the Champions League and progressing to the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup.
But Gordon believes the club still has all the tools available to be successful with continued investment spearheaded by owners, the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund.
“Individually, when you feel settled off the pitch, you automatically become more free on it which ultimately brings the best out of you,” Gordon told the Newcastle United official matchday programme. “I feel like I’m in that position now. The structure of the club, the manager we’ve got, the owners and the investment they’ve put into the squad this year, it gives us all a reason to be successful.
“If you look at the Carabao Cup game against Spurs, the squad we put out, that’s not a usual cup game team. It was star-studded with some unbelievable players on show.
“That shows the strength of the squad and we’ll need absolutely everyone. Ultimately that’s down to the owners investing in the team and giving us every chance.”
