Rangers accept €3.5m deal for Belgian Under-21 star as Danny Röhl closes in on first Ibrox signing

Rangers are edging closer to completing Danny Röhl’s first signing of the January window after agreeing a fee believed to be around €3.5 million for Belgian Under-21 defender Tuur Rommens.

The Ibrox club moved quickly to secure the left-back after he was highlighted as a priority target by Röhl and technical director Dan Purdy, with the position viewed internally as an area in urgent need of reinforcement. Talks gathered pace midweek and an agreement has now been reached with Belgian Pro League side Westerlo.

Reports indicate the deal is nearing completion, with Rommens expected to travel to Glasgow in the coming days to undergo medical checks before finalising personal terms. If everything proceeds as planned, the 22-year-old will become Röhl’s first addition since taking charge.

Strengthening the left side of defence has been high on Röhl’s agenda, particularly with Rangers having relied heavily on teenage loanee Jayden Meghoma during the first half of the campaign. While the youngster has shown promise, the new boss has been keen to add experience and competition in that role.

Westerlo were initially hesitant to part with Rommens, who has been a key figure this season under head coach Issame Charai, a familiar face to Rangers supporters following his previous spell at Ibrox. Despite efforts to keep hold of the defender, the Belgian club ultimately accepted the offer after careful consideration.

Rommens featured regularly earlier in the season before an ankle injury sidelined him in late October. Since returning to fitness last month, he has impressed once again, catching the attention of Rangers scouts and accelerating the club’s pursuit.

Rangers’ renewed focus on Rommens followed a setback elsewhere, after attempts to bring former Hearts defender James Penrice back to Scotland were blocked by AEK Athens. With that door closed, the Light Blues have now turned their attention fully to securing Rommens and are close to getting their man.
