Rangers are edging closer to completing the signing of Sturm Graz midfielder Tochi Chukwuani after a major step was taken in negotiations. The 22-year-old has reportedly been given clearance to undergo a medical with the Ibrox club, signalling that a deal is nearing completion.

Danny Röhl has been open about his desire to strengthen the squad during the January transfer window, and Chukwuani has emerged as a priority target. Talks between Rangers and Sturm Graz have been ongoing for several days, with the midfielder even sitting out a recent friendly as discussions intensified.

Those negotiations now appear to have produced a breakthrough. An agreement is believed to be close on a package worth around €5 million, including performance-related add-ons and a sell-on clause. Italian journalist Luca Bendoni reports that, following progress on the fee, Chukwuani has been authorised to travel for a medical ahead of finalising the move.

Rangers will be keen to complete the process swiftly, with plans in place to put the midfielder through his medical checks before moving on to contract formalities.

Chukwuani joined Sturm Graz in 2024 from Danish side Lyngby and quickly established himself as an important figure. He played his part in a successful campaign that ended with the Austrian Bundesliga title, and his consistent performances have made him a key component of the squad. His expected departure is likely to be felt by the Austrian club, given his influence in midfield.

Alongside the Chukwuani deal, Rangers remain active on other fronts. The club have made enquiries to Sunderland regarding Dan Neil and winger Romaine Mundle as they look to further bolster their options.

Mundle, who Rangers are keen to bring in on loan, has found opportunities limited at Sunderland this season. However, his recent inclusion in Régis Le Bris’ starting lineup against Everton in the FA Cup has added some uncertainty over whether the Black Cats are prepared to let him leave before the window closes.

Rangers, who have worked their way back into the Scottish Premiership title race, will be hopeful that any remaining obstacles can be cleared if Mundle is still available for a temporary move. Röhl has stressed that his squad must maintain their momentum during a demanding period of the season.

With fixtures coming thick and fast across the Premiership, Scottish Cup and Europa League, squad depth will be vital. The coming days could prove decisive as Rangers aim to strengthen and sustain their push on multiple fronts.
