Celtic fans frustrated as TNT Sports blackout causes viewers to miss crucial Europa League goal

Celtic fans are left frustrated as TNT Sports feed cuts out during Europa League tie

Celtic supporters were left furious on Thursday night after a TNT Sports broadcast blackout caused viewers to miss a crucial goal during the Hoops’ Europa League clash with FC Utrecht.

The match carried huge significance for Celtic in a season that has unravelled dramatically, with both Brendan Rodgers and Wilfried Nancy departing and Martin O’Neill once again stepping in as caretaker manager. Defeat would have ended Celtic’s European campaign, denying them a top-24 finish and a play-off place that could have offered some redemption.

Celtic made the perfect start, storming into a 3–0 lead inside the opening 20 minutes. Goals from Benjamin Nygren and Arne Engels, followed by an own goal from Utrecht captain Nick Viergever, appeared to put the tie firmly under control.

However, familiar European nerves soon crept in. Utrecht struck just before half-time through Dani de Wit, and when Adrian Blake reduced the deficit shortly after the break, the atmosphere inside the stadium – and among supporters watching at home – became increasingly tense.

Matters worsened when the TNT Sports broadcast suddenly cut out. Viewers were left staring at a blackout for around four minutes, with adverts briefly shown as the broadcaster attempted to resolve the technical issue.

By the time coverage resumed, another goal had been scored. To the relief of Celtic fans, it was their side who had found the net.

Former Arsenal defender Auston Trusty headed home from a corner to restore a two-goal cushion, making it 4–2 on the night just minutes after Utrecht’s second. The broadcast returned to show Trusty celebrating, with TNT later airing replays of the goal viewers had missed.

Despite the positive outcome, supporters were quick to vent their frustration on social media.

One fan wrote on X: “This is absolutely awful from Celtic. And it seems the camera operator has had enough because the TNT Sports stream is gone.”

Another posted: “TNT why ye showing an advert midway through the second half of the Celtic game?”

A third added: “Celtic score and TNT Sports made us miss it. Stupid channel! MON EH SELLICK!”

While Celtic ultimately secured the result they needed, the broadcast failure left a sour taste for many supporters who missed one of the defining moments of the night.
