Chelsea decided to recall Marc Guiu from his loan spell at the Stadium of Light during the summer. Despite bringing him back, the Blues haven’t handed him enough minutes so far, and his future is once again up in the air.

The 19-year-old striker could once again leave Stamford Bridge in the winter window, and according to a report from TEAMtalk, Sunderland are considering re-signing him. However, they are far from convinced about bringing him back and could look at other targets.

Guiu’s sensational rise at Barcelona’s famous youth academy, La Masia, caught the attention of Chelsea. Just months after getting promoted to their senior side, the Blues struck a deal with the Catalan giants.

While the London club consider him an important part of their long-term plans, he hardly had enough minutes during his debut campaign. The teenager was involved in just 16 matches, racked up just over 600 minutes of first-team action despite scoring six goals.

With the Blues signing Joao Pedro and Liam Delap in the summer, Enzo Maresca wasn’t certain about handing him enough minutes this season as well. As a result, they ended up sending him out on loan to Sunderland back in August.

While he did feature in three games for the Black Cats and even bagged a goal, the Blues decided to terminate his loan in September following Nicolas Jackson’s departure and Liam Delap’s injury. Since returning to Stamford Bridge, he has only featured in one league game.

Will Guiu return to Sunderland?

He almost seemed certain to play for the London club upon his return. However, things haven’t gone according to plan for him. With Delap and Cole Palmer both expected to be back fit before the turn of the calendar, Guiu’s future has again become a big talking point.

Sunderland is the only way out for the teenager, as FIFA rules only allow one player to play for two teams in the same season. Having only played a handful of minutes during his spell at the Black Cats, it is still not certain if they will try to re-sign him.

They weren’t pleased with Chelsea’s decision to recall him and are looking at the market for better options before committing to any renewed approach for the Barcelona graduate. Sunderland are going to give it careful thought before making a decision.
