Hugh Keevins has claimed that Martin O’Neill will remain in charge of Celtic for next month’s Premier Sports Cup final, with the club unable to appoint their preferred permanent manager until after the match.
O’Neill, who returned to the dugout following Brendan Rodgers’ sudden resignation, has made an immediate impact since stepping back in. He has guided Celtic to back-to-back wins, including the 3-1 extra-time victory over Rangers at Hampden that booked the Hoops a place in next month’s final against St Mirren.

The former Celtic manager has brought stability and confidence back to the side in a turbulent period, earning strong backing from supporters who have called for him to stay on until the end of the season. However, Keevins’ comments indicate the club’s hierarchy already has a long-term plan in motion, one that will see O’Neill remain in charge only until their top target is available.
He said: (Clyde 1 Superscoreboard), “Well I was specifically told just that. He would be there in December.
“Because they can’t get the man that they want until December.”
Keevins’ comments suggest Celtic are taking their time with the search for a new manager, choosing to wait for the right person instead of rushing into an appointment. Having Martin O’Neill in charge gives the club some breathing space, allowing the board to plan carefully while keeping stability on the pitch.
O’Neill’s impact has already been clear to see. Since stepping back into the dugout, Celtic have looked sharper, more organised, and far more confident. The defensive shape has improved, the team is playing with greater energy, and there’s a sense of belief that had faded in the final weeks under Brendan Rodgers. His experience has clearly helped settle things down after a difficult period.
Keeping O’Neill in charge for the cup final looks like a smart move. His knowledge of big games, his winning mentality, and his ability to get the best out of players in pressure moments make him the perfect man to guide Celtic into another Hampden final.
Supporters will continue to wonder who the next permanent manager might be, but O’Neill’s focus is firmly on the here and now. He’s already steadied the ship and delivered two big wins. With a trophy up for grabs next month, his return could yet provide another special chapter in his long connection with Celtic.
