Alexander Isak statement comes back to haunt him as Newcastle United advance

Alexander Isak was Newcastle United’s hero in the 2025 Carabao Cup final, but he will not be returning in 2026.

While Dan Burn’s Wembley goal is more iconic, it was actually Alexander Isak who netted what proved to be the winner against Liverpool back in March.

He became a Newcastle United legend in that moment, before tarnishing his legacy just months later. Isak’s move to Liverpool and the actions that forced it through have ruined his reputation on Tyneside, with Toon fans watching on with glee as he struggles to burst into life at Anfield.

That glee continued on Wednesday night in the Carabao Cup.

Alexander Isak won’t win ‘everything’ at Liverpool this season

Newcastle United are in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals after beating Tottenham Hotspur, with Eddie Howe’s side dreaming of a return to Wembley.

However, there will be no repeat of the 2025 final, with Liverpool being dumped out of the competition by Crystal Palace. They lost 3-0 on Wednesday night, with Arne Slot making 10 changes to his side.

One of those changes did not include a return for Isak, who is currently absent with a groin problem.

The 25-year-old is not going to be able to win back-to-back Carabao Cups, with something he said immediately after joining Liverpool now coming back to bite him.

Upon his arrival at Anfield, Isak told their official website: “I want to win everything.”

While that may happen over time, it will not be true this season. Isak will not be winning the Carabao Cup with Liverpool, whereas his former Newcastle United teammates have a chance of defending their crown.

Given the disarray that the Reds are suddenly in, it is difficult to imagine them winning anything this season. The Premier League champions have fallen behind, sitting seven points behind leaders Arsenal.

Nick Woltemade does it again as Newcastle United aim for Wembley return without Alexander Isak

While Isak was watching his Liverpool teammates tumble out of the Carabao Cup, his replacement at St James’ Park was scoring his sixth goal of the season.

Nick Woltemade scored the second goal of the game in Newcastle United’s 2-0 win over Spurs, heading home Joe Willock’s cross to put the result beyond doubt.

It was another wonderful performance from the 23-year-old, who is proving to be unstoppable in black and white. Woltemade has been outstanding for Newcastle, and there is certainly even more to come.

He has made the transition away from Isak look easy, with Newcastle ‘investing in better’ when they bought Woltemade.
