Celtic on the Brink of Striker Signing as BBC Sport Confirms Deal.

With the sacking of Wilfried Nancy, and the appointment of Martin O’Neill until the end of the season, there is some newfound confidence among Celtic fans that the club can turn this season around. That being said, the board need to bolster the squad with some quality signings in the January transfer window.

There are a lot of holes in the current Celtic squad. A number of positions are weak, and do not have much in the name of depth either.

Striker has to be considered one of them. Johnny Kenny is the first-choice option there right now, but his finishing has been poor. Perhaps even that is putting it too kindly. On the other hand, Callum Osmand and Kelechi Iheanacho are both dealing with fitness issues. Daizen Maeda has lost his goalscoring touch.

All things considered, this is not a situation that you want to be in. And one can only hope that Celtic add to their striker ranks in the winter.

‘Close to an agreement’ – Celtic tipped to sign striker as BBC Sport confirm news

Interestingly, some quality options could be available soon. As reported by BBC Sport, West Ham United are close to an agreement with Callum Wilson to terminate his contract.

Chris Sutton has suggested Wilson as a possible option for Celtic despite acknowledging his fitness record. As reported by Glasgow World, the Celtic legend said on Sky Sports:

“There is talk of Callum Wilson and his contract ending at West Ham. I know he has been injury prone before but Celtic have to gamble.

“That’s not a position the club or the fans want to be in but that’s what they have to do now. Celtic are six points behind Hearts and Rangers have caught them up. Nobody can tell me there hasn’t been complacency. You only need to look at what’s happened. It’s short-term now and needs must, back Martin O’Neill in January, and give yourselves the best possible chance of winning the Premiership. That is all Celtic can do now.”

Wilson would be another injury-prone player in a squad that is full of them. Clearly, that is not the ideal situation. But when fit, he can be a quality addition to this team, and bring pretty much guaranteed goals.

One could argue that signing just one striker in the winter won’t be enough for Celtic. If they sign Wilson alongside somebody with a better fitness record, it might not be the worst idea in the world. Let’s see how things play out.
