Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has warned he won’t get swept away with Elliot Anderson’s continued Premier League rise – despite admitting last month he would love him back.
Since then, Anderson has been linked with Man City, Spurs and Man United with all three keen on the former Academy product. Fresh reports this week emerging from Nottingham Forest have suggested that the City Ground side will demand an astronomical fee of up to £120million for the Whitley Bay lad’s services.

And even though Newcastle would sign him back in a heartbeat, such a fee could be beyond the Magpies with Howe playing down talk of an expensive return. Howe effectively suggested that January would be a non-starter to re-sign their former player.
Howe told Chronicle Live: “Sentiment never comes into it – it is always about finance. We have not had any discussions on the January window.
“We’re too focused on the amount of games we have. That will take focus for now.
“Certainly paying fees like that (£120m), and I am not sure we are going to be in a position to do that. I am talking about that without any knowledge on January.
“It is just not really a window that big fees are usually paid.”
Howe’s answer on Anderson also dropped a hint on other potential transfer activity too and that Newcastle may not splash out on one big name with a number of positions to be covered.
Howe added: “There is always a long-term management of PSR and long-term management on our financial situation. We can’t let one transfer unbalance that.”
it is expected that all things recruitment-wise, as well as contract extensions, with Howe adding: “Those discussions are ongoing all the time now. Now we have Ross here, which is a great thing for me.
“It allows me not to engage in those conversations too often because Ross will be speaking to the board and the appropriate people throughout the season. I’ll be speaking to Ross on a daily basis.”
The impending renewals coming the way of Newcastle are Kieran Trippier and Fabian Schar – who are both out of contract at the end of the season.
Howe said: “Decisions on futures are for a later date. We are now in the thick of the season, and it is game after game.
“The players’ minds have been very good and they have been very focused on trying to deliver their best performances, and if they continue to play as well as they are, their futures will take care of themselves.”
