Newcastle United’s new striker cut a frustrated figure on Sunday as Eddie Howe’s side held Bournemouth to a stalemate

Newcastle made some significant rotations to face up to a confident Bournemouth, but introducing some fresh legs after their opening Champions League game against Barcelona failed to produce much of an attacking threat.

Good chances were few and far between for either side in a cagey match, and Eddie Howe’s team only managed the one shot on target all game.

Nick Woltemade led the line in his second start for the club, but couldn’t add to his account before he was subbed off late on.

A gesture from Woltemade made it crystal clear that he wanted his teammates to play the ball to his feet despite his 6ft 6in frame, showing that there’s work to do before he settles into the team.

Howe agreed that Newcastle are undergoing a big change now that Alexander Isak has left, saying: “Naturally we will be a different team without Alex, we will be attacking with a different emphasis.”

Some fans agree with Howe, but whether it’s the squad or Woltemade that has to change is anyone’s guess. Reader Magpiejack says: “We haven’t worked out how to get the best out of Nick. It surprises me in truth, Eddie Howe is great tactically, Nick has great touches, but for me he is always too deep. Thoughts anyone?”

Commenter Towerman writes: “We must accept that Woltemade will take time to settle in to the team. The reason Eddie wanted Wissa was because he is an experienced Premier League player, which would give the young German more time. No need for such negativity, it’s early days.”

Mervynb says: “Don’t worry Nick, we are still getting used to playing with you, and I am sure that you will come good.”

DurbanSkyslot adds: “Woltemade had a decent game today, any striker would have struggled for Newcastle today as service was at a premium.”

Axepete writes: “Nick will be a top player, for me there is no doubt about that. His touch is great and once he gets up to full speed and acclimatises to the demands of the Premier League, he will get lots of goals and assists. Have patience everyone. We will be superb when Wissa joins the squad.”
