Elated Rangers icon Ally McCoist mocked Celtic over their latest stoppage-time drama against Kilmarnock.
The Hoops needed until the 97th minute to claim all three points versus Kilmarnock after Julian Araujo made it 3-2, sealing a stunning comeback at Rugby Park. It came on the back of a last-ditch equaliser that forced the Scottish Cup tie with Dundee into extra time and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s match-winning effort against Livingston earlier in the week.
An irate Neil McCann challenged where the officials found the injury-time minutes, with the Kilmarnock manager alleging the referees had conjured up the seven added minutes. Ibrox favourite Kris Boyd supported the Rugby Park boss in the debate.
McCoist, meanwhile, could not resist taking a swipe at Celtic fanatic Alan Brazil. Reflecting on the match on the talkSPORT Breakfast Show, the presenter admitted: “Celtic looked like a pub team first half. I don’t like to say it, but a pub team.”
McCoist smiled: “It’s incredible isn’t it. And did you see the boy hold up the added time? There was no numbers on it, it just said ‘until Celtic score’.”
Brazil responded: “See, you texted me that. You are back in the race now and you still can’t accept it.”
McCoist replied: “I sent you it, it said ‘until Celtic score’.” The Rangers legend then burst into laughter before continuing: “It was funny mind, but fair play, they did keep going, but you can’t keep doing that, surely? Well, you probably can right enough…”
Brazil interrupted, acknowledging Celtic manager Martin O’Neill would not have been pleased with the champions’ display: “Martin must have gone crazy.”
McCoist said: “I can tell you right now, after the game Martin was clearly not happy. Clearly delighted to get the winner, but you could tell he was not happy.”
Brazil then turned the tables on McCoist regarding his earlier criticism of Youssef Chermiti — who struck a hat-trick in the vital win over league leaders Hearts.
He asked: “Are you not one of those who said that centre-forward is right diddy, who bought him? Get rid of him. Not good enough for Rangers.”
McCoist laughed: “I said that, but accept from the big games. I quite like the look of the other one [Ryan Naderi], but the big boy that scored a hat-trick, his second goal – the header – was tremendous.”
Celtic supporter Brazil then admitted he had concerns about the title run-in, stating: “I will say now, if I was a regular Celtic fan going home and away, I would be worried about the Old Firm games now. In midfield, Rangers will boss the midfield.”
McCoist added: “I quite like the boy they have signed in the middle of the park, [Tochi] Chukwuani. He looks strong.”
Brazil concluded: “I think Celtic struggle in there at the moment, I really do.”
