Celtic have been loosely linked with several Scottish Premiership players this January, and interim manager Martin O’Neill has made it clear he’s not closing the door on recruiting talent from the SPFL.
Names such as Kieron Bowie and Josh Mulligan have been mentioned in supporter circles and on social media as potential targets, while a growing section of the fanbase are calling for Celtic to move for Tawanda Maswanhise.

The Motherwell forward has impressed this season with 10 goals and 2 assists in 19 league appearances, making him one of the standout performers in Scotland’s top flight.

When asked directly if a move for players from the domestic league was something Celtic would consider, O’Neill gave a frank and positive reply:

“Yeah, there’s definitely players in the Scottish market that could play on our team.” [Celtic TV]

O’Neill didn’t shut down the idea and in a window where fans have been frustrated by limited activity, that openness to the SPFL market is notable.

Celtic’s recruitment so far this window has been sluggish, with only a loan signing at right‑back confirmed. With the title race tight and competitors like Rangers and Hearts adding players, supporters want to see reinforcements brought in now rather than later.

O’Neill says that he hopes that he can have some fresh faces in for Celtic’s trip to Hearts next Saturday, live on Sky Sports.

With the transfer window open until 11pm on February 2, there’s still time for moves to happen, but you’d hope that they come sooner rather than later.
