Mourinho Move May Open Door for Roberto Martinez to Celtic

Roberto Martínez could soon be back on the managerial market as Celtic continue their search for a permanent successor following another turbulent season.

The Spaniard is currently in charge of Portugal and is set to lead them at the World Cup later this year. However, reports suggest his time in the role may come to an end after the tournament, with José Mourinho being lined up as his potential replacement.

Celtic, meanwhile, are operating under interim management once again. After Wilfried Nancy was dismissed in January, the club turned back to Martin O’Neill for a second spell this season. O’Neill is expected to remain in charge until the campaign concludes, at which point the club will look to appoint a permanent manager.

Martínez is a familiar name to Celtic supporters. He was previously linked with the role following Neil Lennon’s departure and again after Ange Postecoglou left the club. One factor that has kept his name in the conversation is his close professional relationship with Shaun Maloney, who is currently part of the interim coaching staff.

The 52-year-old managed Maloney during his time at Wigan Athletic, before later bringing him into the national set-up with Belgium. Maloney would go on to become Martínez’s assistant with the Red Devils, a partnership that has remained strong ever since.

While Martínez has only been loosely linked with Celtic during the current search, largely through social media speculation, the uncertainty surrounding his future could see those links firm up in the coming months. According to ESPN, via RecordSport, Mourinho is being lined up to take over the Portugal job after the summer, a move that would free Martínez to consider new opportunities.

With Celtic expected to move decisively once the season ends, Martínez’s situation is one worth monitoring. His availability, experience at international level and existing ties within the club’s current coaching set-up may yet bring his name firmly back into the frame.
