With Champions League football on offer, and the opportunity to play alongside genuine world-class talent, it’s no wonder that the Newcastle United project is so enticing to a number of young stars in Europe and around the world.
In the last two years alone, we’ve beaten Real Madrid and Barcelona to the signing of Antonio Cordero, made waves in South Korea by bringing in Park Seung-Soo, and could soon have the next great Eastern European star in Georgia’s Vakhtang Salia.
With the club keen to future-proof the squad and improve the level of international scouting, yet another European gem is believed to be on our radar heading into 2026…
Newcastle eyeing Ajax star
In his latest piece for Sky Sports, Sacha Tavolieri reveals that Newcastle United could rival Manchester United over a deal for Ajax sensation Jorthy Mokio.
The versatile Belgian is reportedly unsettled in Amsterdam, and seems open to a move away from the Dutch giants as part of the next stage of his blossoming career.
Mokio’s youth and ability to play both across the defence and in midfield could appeal to Eddie Howe, and he would fit in perfectly alongside Lewis Hall, Tino Livramento, Sven Botman and Malick Thiaw as part of the next generation of top young talents at St James’ Park.
However, Manchester United also have their eye on the Belgian international, and German side Eintracht Frankfurt could also offer Mokio significant game time that neither us nor Manchester United can at this moment in time.
Valuable minutes and experience is, according to Tavolieri, Mokio’s top priority, as well as a clear place as part of his next club’s overall project.
Overseas talents continue to be linked
With the transfer window just weeks away from opening, it’s no surprise to see such a plethora of young talent being linked with Newcastle over the past fortnight.
Firstly, there was the Club Brugge duo of Aleksandar Stankovic and Joel Ordonez, and this has been followed up with AZ Alkmaar’s Kees Smit and Vasco de Gama’s highly-rated Brazilian Rayan Vitor.
Each of those names gives us a clear indicator as to where we want to strengthen in the coming windows, and it looks like defensive-focused signings will be high on Eddie Howe, Ross Wilson and the recruitment team’s transfer wish list over the next few windows.
