The former England star is open to a new deal at St James’ Park despite summer interest from Monaco

Eddie Howe wants Kieran Trippier’s contract uncertainty resolved at Newcastle United. The former England star, now 35, has less than a year left on his current deal and turned down a move to Monaco at the end of the transfer window.

Trippier will be free to talk to overseas clubs from January onwards about a transfer when his deal expires on June 30 next year.

It is understood that Monaco remain keen while there is also interest from Major League Soccer clubs and the Saudi Pro League.

The ex-Tottenham Hotspur star is said to be open to a one-year extension at St James’ Park and as Chronicle Live reported earlier this month his current arrangement contains no trigger to take him beyond June 30 next year.

Trippier started Newcastle’s first four Premier League games before being dropped to the bench for the Bournemouth and Arsenal games. However, Tino Livramento’s injury on Sunday could see the veteran return to the starting XI for the Champions League clash against Union SG.

Howe said: “Kieran is a very, very experienced player and very important for us. His contract length is something that an incoming sporting director will be on top of.

“For me, at the moment, with the amount of games we have, contracts of players take less importance as it is about concentrating on the games. But I think these things will be taken care of by the club I’m sure.”

Trippier has clocked up over 600 appearances for Newcastle, Burnley, Spurs and Atletico Madrid and Howe has twice fought to keep him after interest from Saudi Arabia and a £13m bid from Bayern Munich in 2024.

When asked about his playing career, Trippier said last year: “I’m not done yet. This is what I love. This is what I was born to do. I won’t stop until someone tells me to stop. Hopefully, you will see me for many years here.”

Having fought to save Trippier from a sale last January, Howe said earlier this year: “No part of us wanted to lose Kieran (in January).

“He is unique, there is no one can do what he can do – set-play delivery, passing ability and his overall leadership in unique.

“The old school leadership where you’re talking and communicating with everybody, thinking about the whole team rather than just yourself, it is almost a bit of a dying art now.”

Howe will keen to avoid a situation similar to Callum Wilson’s contract expiry when the head coach wanted to offer him an extension but the board would not budge on anything beyond a pay as you play deal before the No 9 opted to join West Ham.
