Newcastle United hit by full-back crisis after learning Lewis Hall injury news

The former Chelsea player is unlikely to be back for the next Premier League game and will learn the full extent of the damage in due course

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe admits that Lewis Hall faces an anxious wait to see how many games he will miss after picking up a hamstring injury.

The England international, as reported by Chronicle Live on Sunday, sustained a muscle injury in Belgium during the 4-0 win over Union SG. But for the short-term, Newcastle have something of a full-back crisis with Tino Livramento also out until November.

Confirming Hall’s absence, Howe said: “He felt his hamstring after the Union SG game which was a real blow for us and we are trying to manage him back.

“He just felt something. We will have it scanned before he gets conclusive evidence. We will get it re-scanned in 10 days’ time. Hopefully it’s a short term injury and and not a long-term one.”

The 2-0 victory over the City Ground side heaped pressure on Ange Postecoglou, who left the field looking like a lonely figure after Newcastle fans taunted him over another potential sacking.

But for Howe, it was all about his team holding their nerve during a tense affair on Tyneside, with two goals in the final half hour earning only Newcastle’s second win of the season.

Howe said: “The break has probably come at a bad time for us with the momentum. We will take it and dust the players down and regroup.

“We started the season really well defensively. We have been solid and resilient. It’s a good mix for us because you are only a goal away from winning a game.”

After an uphill first half, Newcastle came alive after the break thanks to Bruno Guimaraes’ wonder goal. Howe said: “The second half was better. I thought we had control of the second half, and we needed a moment to bring us the goal.

“Bruno’s goal was a moment of magic from an unbelievable player. He makes a difference more often than not.”
