Rangers could be edging closer to one of the most eye-catching loan deals of the January window if the latest update from Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg proves accurate.

According to the respected journalist, talks have been opened between Rangers and Wolfsburg over a potential move for Danish international winger Andreas Skov Olsen. The 26-year-old was notably left out of Wolfsburg’s squad for their clash with Bayern Munich despite not being injured, a decision that has only fuelled speculation that a departure is looming. With his contract running until 2029, Olsen is understood to be eager for a fresh challenge after seeing his opportunities dry up in the Bundesliga.

Skov Olsen’s career has taken him across several major European leagues. He came through the youth ranks at Alsønderup SG&I before making his name at FC Nordsjælland, breaking into the first team at just 17 years old. His rapid rise earned him a move to Bologna in 2019, but his time in Serie A failed to fully ignite.

A switch to Club Brugge in early 2022 proved to be the turning point. Olsen rediscovered his form in Belgium, which ultimately secured him a big-money move to Wolfsburg. While he featured heavily during the early stages of his Bundesliga spell, recent issues with form and fitness have pushed him down the pecking order.

With World Cup qualifiers approaching, Olsen is believed to be determined to secure regular minutes in order to remain part of Denmark manager Brian Riemer’s plans. Rangers are reportedly prepared to cover a substantial loan fee to bring him to Ibrox for the remainder of the season, with the club’s board keen to fully support Danny Röhl after his impressive turnaround following a difficult period under Russell Martin.

Why Skov Olsen makes sense for Rangers

Rangers have already added depth out wide with the arrivals of Djeidi Gassama, Mikey Moore, and Oliver Antman, while academy prospect Findlay Curtis and senior players such as Nedim Bajrami, Rabbi Matondo, and Danilo provide additional options. However, output from the wide positions has fallen short of expectations.

Bajrami, Matondo, and Danilo are understood to be available for transfer, having failed to convince Röhl they fit into his long-term vision. While Gassama has caught the eye with his creativity and technical ability, his end product has been inconsistent. Antman has yet to score in 20 appearances and is currently sidelined through injury, while Moore has contributed just three goals and two assists across 26 matches since joining on loan from Tottenham Hotspur.

The absence of Vaclav Černý has also been felt. The Czech winger delivered 27 goal contributions in 52 games during his loan spell last season, also arriving from Wolfsburg. Whether Skov Olsen could replicate that impact remains to be seen, but the parallels are obvious.

Naturally left-footed, Olsen thrives on the right flank as an inverted winger, using his pace, close control, and creativity to unsettle defenders. If Rangers can get the deal over the line, his arrival could add a new dimension to their attack as they push to challenge Celtic and Hearts in the title race.

For now, all eyes are on the negotiations, but momentum appears to be building around what could be one of the most exciting loan moves of the window for the Light Blues.
