Ryan Kent 2.0: Rangers open talks to sign a “frightening” talent

Glasgow Rangers are not wasting any time in the January transfer window in their efforts to improve Danny Rohl’s squad for a Scottish Premiership title race.

Rommens is set to come in as Rohl’s only permanent senior left-back option, with Jayden Meghoma on loan from Brentford as his competition, and Chukwuani could provide cover for Connor Barron, who is now set to miss months through injury.

A £7m splash on these two players shows that the owners are backing their manager and are willing to commit significant funds to improving the team in the midst of a title race.

Rangers make approach to sign Premier League forward

The Scottish giants are not content with those two signings, though, as they are reportedly looking to make further additions to their squad before the end of the month.

According to Sky Sports, Glasgow Rangers are interested in a deal to sign Sunderland left winger Romaine Mundle in the January transfer window.

The report claims that the Gers have already made an approach to enquire about the possibility of a deal for the English attacker, as they look to bolster their attacking ranks in the coming weeks.

It adds that Sunderland are open to allowing the forward to leave the club on loan until the end of the season, as he is yet to start a single game in the Premier League this season.

Sky Sports also reveals that the Light Blues have enquired about a move for his teammate, Dan Neil, whose contract is due to expire in the summer and could be available on a permanent deal this month.

Why Romaine Mundle could be the new Ryan Kent at Rangers

Rangers could repeat the blinder they once played with Ryan Kent by signing Mundle on an initial loan deal from the Black Cats to be their new left winger.

Prior to joining Rangers on loan from Liverpool in 2018, Kent had played 54 Championship matches with Bristol City and Barnsley in the previous two seasons, per Transfermarkt, scoring three goals and providing five assists.

Gers supporters know the rest. The English forward went on to join the club on a permanent deal for £7m after one season on loan, and ended his career at Ibrox with 33 goals and 56 assists in 218 appearances, per Transfermarkt.

Mundle could make a remarkably similar move to the Scottish giants, as he is currently a Premier League player, but he caught the eye whilst playing in the Championship last season.

The 22-year-old star was limited to 22 appearances in the division, through injury, yet still managed to produce five goals and two assists to help Sunderland on their way to promotion to the top-flight.

As you can see in the table above, Mundle ranked highly among his positional peers in a host of key attacking metrics per 90, which speaks to the quality that he provided when fit and available.

Ranking in the top 15% for goals per 90 whilst only ranking in the bottom 44% for xG shows that he can be an efficient finisher who does not waste many opportunities in front of goal.

Mundle’s statistics last season also show that he can be an incredibly creative winger who likes to take his full-back on with his impressive dribbling skills. Remind you of any former Gers winger?

Journalist Josh Bunting claims that the English attacker would be “perfect” for Rohl’s style of football and says that he would be a “frightening” talent in Scotland, which is backed up by his statistics last term.

If Mundle can hit the ground running on loan and provide a Kent-esque presence on the left wing, cutting in to score and create goals on a regular basis, then the club may want to do a permanent deal for him in the summer transfer window.

Therefore, the 22-year-old star could end up being a Kent repeat for the Light Blues as another Premier League loanee with Championship experience who has the potential to become a star at Ibrox.
