Celtic Make January Defender Loan Decision

Posted on January 27, 2025

Celtic have defensive issues to address, and nobody at Parkhead is pretending otherwise. January is shaping up to be a window driven by necessity rather than luxury, with significant work required across the back line. One name, though, will not feature in that rebuild.

Stephen Welsh will not be recalled from his loan spell at Motherwell FC.

According to the Daily Record, Celtic have decided to let the defender see out the remainder of the season at Fir Park, despite his strong performances for the Steelmen. The report states there is no intention to bring the 25-year-old back to Glasgow in January.

Welsh is currently surplus to requirements under Wilfried Nancy, and the club hierarchy believe a full campaign of regular football is the best route to increasing his market value ahead of a potential summer move. With Celtic needing immediate solutions at centre-back, recalling a player they no longer view as part of the long-term picture was never high on the agenda.

The academy graduate has enjoyed a productive spell with Motherwell, becoming a key figure in their defensive setup. His consistency has helped push them up to fourth in the Premiership table, and there is little doubt he is enjoying his football away from the pressure that comes with Celtic Park.

For Welsh, the loan has offered something he struggled to secure in Glasgow: week-to-week starts and a clearly defined role.

At Celtic, opportunities came in bursts. Despite contributing during title-winning seasons and stepping in when needed, he was never able to establish himself as a first-choice option. Competition, injuries, and managerial changes all played their part, but the outcome was the same.

From the club’s perspective, the decision is straightforward. January is about fixing immediate problems, not revisiting options already deemed insufficient. Allowing Welsh to continue performing well at Fir Park protects his value and keeps options open for the summer, when squad restructuring can be approached with greater clarity and less urgency.

Stephen Welsh Celtic Fc

Welsh remains a player formed by the club and respected internally for his professionalism. That respect, however, does not alter the reality. The Hoops need upgrades in defence, and Stephen Welsh is no longer viewed as one of them.
