‘Deal agreed’ – Sky Sports confirm Celtic’s first signing under Martin O’Neill

Posted on January 21, 2026

Sky Sports have confirmed that Celtic have finally agreed a deal for what will be their first signing under Martin O’Neill this season.

After weeks of failed talks and collapsed deals, Celtic are finally set to bring in their first signing under Martin O’Neill this season. The Northern Irishman has repeatedly called for additions to be made to his squad. Fortunately, one is set to be made now. And it should be over the line in time for the all-important game against Hearts at the weekend.

Celtic’s biggest need this winter is strengthening their striker ranks. There is a belief that the Hoops are targeting two centre-forwards in this window. One signing seems to be on the verge of completion.

Celtic had been linked with a variety of names in recent weeks. Mohamed Bamba, David Datro Fofana, Andrej Ilic, Jonas Wind, and quite a few others were said to be on their radar. But they are set to sign somebody who had not been mentioned at all as a potential signing.

As reported by Sky Sports, Celtic have agreed a deal to sign Borussia Monchengladbach striker Tomas Cvancara. It is understood that the clubs have agreed on a loan deal with an option to buy included in it.

Cvancara is a full Czech Republic international and is currently on the books at Borussia Monchengladbach. He has not exactly been a success story in the Bundesliga though.

Cvancara spent the first half of the season out on loan at Turkish side Antalyaspor. Now, he is headed to Celtic. One can only hope that he scores a lot more often that he did for his last few clubs.

In the past, he has shown that he can find the back of the net consistently. At Sparta Prague, he scored 24 goals in 49 games, which had earned him the move to Borussia Monchengladbach. And standing at 6’3″, he is the kind of profile we have seen succeed under the management of O’Neill.
