He Was ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING!” – Martin O’Neill Drops BOMBSHELL on the UNEXPECTED Celtic Hero Who SINGLE-HANDEDLY Won It vs Rangers… And It’s NOT Who You Think!

Posted on March 8, 2026

Celtic manager Martin O’Neill singled out Ireland international Liam Scales for high praise after his side eliminated Rangers from the Scottish Cup in dramatic fashion at Ibrox.

Celtic eventually triumphed 4-2 on penalties following a tense 0-0 draw over 120 minutes in a match that ended with chaotic scenes as supporters from both teams entered the pitch after the final whistle.

While the post-match disorder grabbed much of the attention, Martin O’Neill was keen to emphasise the character his squad displayed during a physically demanding encounter.

Celtic were forced to defend for extended periods against a Rangers side that dominated large portions of the game, but the visitors held firm before prevailing in the shootout.

Speaking afterwards, Martin O’Neill commended the resilience of his players after what he described as an exhausting run of fixtures.

“We had to defend for long periods in the game and we did that brilliantly.

We were really, really worn out. It was our fourth game in ten days, but the players were throwing themselves on the line, making crucial blocks, and doing all the things you need to do in a match like this.”

With captain Callum McGregor unavailable, along with Kieran Tierney, the responsibility fell on Ireland defender Liam Scales to wear the armband.

O’Neill felt the former UCD and Shamrock Rovers man rose admirably to the challenge.

“I thought that Scales was just absolutely outstanding.

Took over the captain’s armband and he led by example the way that Callum has been doing for years and years.”

Despite the controversy and the chaotic scenes after the final whistle, O’Neill insisted the focus should remain on Celtic’s display and their progression to the semi-finals.

“Old Firm games are explosive. They always have been.

And maybe that’s one of the reasons the derby is one of the best in the world.”

For Liam Scales, this performance will only boost his growing reputation as one of the most dependable defenders available to Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrímsson.
