Celtic consider making offer to sign Premier League striker permanently

Posted on January 23, 2026

According to a report, Celtic are considering making an offer to sign the Premier League striker permanently.

Celtic have made one important move already this January, signing Tomas Cvancara from Borussia Monchengladbach. It is an initial loan deal but the belief is that the Hoops have a £7 million buyout clause included in it as well. They badly needed to add to their forward ranks in this window, and it is great to see that they have done that.

That might not be the end of Celtic’s striker search this winter though. There has been heavy speculation that the club want to sign not one, but two, centre-forwards in order to improve Martin O’Neill’s options up top.

That means that all the players they had been linked with before the arrival of Cvancara was officially announced remain relevant. One such name is that of David Datro Fofana of Chelsea, somebody that the Hoops had unsuccessfully tried to sign in the summer. Could it be second time lucky for the Glasgow giants?

Fofana spent the first half of the season out on loan at Turkish side Fatih Karagumruk, after turning down the chance to join Celtic. He scored 8 goals in 15 appearances there, but has now been recalled by Chelsea, who are believed to be eyeing a permanent exit for the Ivorian striker.

As reported by Football Insider, Celtic are considering making an offer to sign Fofana on a permanent deal. This is due to Chelsea’s reluctance to sanction another loan.

Is Fofana someone who can be a long-term contributor for Celtic? He was very good at Molde, which earned him the move to Chelsea. But he was never able to make his mark at Stamford Bridge. His loan spell at Fatih Karaguruk was solid, and he was decent enough for Burnley as well. The Ivorian did flop at Union Berlin though.

So, Fofan’s record so far has been a mixed bag. If Celtic sign him permanently, there would be a bit of risk involved, but at this point, they need to take some.
