Auburn signs LSU defensive tackle transfer Walter Mathis Jr.

Posted on January 16, 2026

Auburn has signed LSU defensive line transfer Walter Mathis Jr., Auburn Undercover has learned.

Originally from Savannah, Georgia, Mathis appeared in 12 games and totaled nine tackles as a true freshman for LSU in 2025. He arrives at Auburn with three years of eligibility remaining. Mathis is listed at 6-foot-2 and 285 pounds.

Mathis is the third defensive lineman for Vontrell King-Williams through the transfer portal this offseason, joining Cody Sigler (Arkansas State) and Saint Farriot (App State) as additions. Auburn is currently hosting North Carolina transfer D’Antre Robinson and still actively pursuing other defensive linemen, too.

Coming out of Calvary Day School in the 2025 class, Mathis was a target for King-Williams coming out of high school and took an official visit to Auburn. He ended up committing to and signing with LSU.

AUBURN FOOTBALL TRANSFER PORTAL LIVE TRACKER

The NCAA Division I Administrative Council in October enacted new transfer rules that shifted the way that the portal calendar works for FBS and FCS athletes:

– Instead of the transfer portal window opening in early December, as it had in recent years, it will now stretch from Jan. 2 to Jan. 16.

– The NCAA eliminated the spring transfer portal window.‌

– Unlike in previous years when graduate transfers could enter at any time through the spring window, they are required to utilize the same Jan. 2 to 16 window as everyone else.

– Previously, players whose school experienced a coaching change were able to enter the transfer portal immediately over a 30-day period. Now, players must wait five days until a new coach is hired to trigger a 15-day window. That window is triggered only if a coaching change happens after Jan. 2.
