Celtic Ready to Sell Johnny Kenny This Summer – But He’s Desperate to Stay and Prove Himself at Parkhead

Posted on March 17, 2026

Celtic are prepared to part ways with Johnny Kenny on a permanent deal this summer — but the young striker is still determined to fight for his future at the club.

Reports suggest the Hoops are open to selling Kenny once he returns, especially if new attacking signings arrive. With the club prioritising a striker in the upcoming transfer window, competition for places is expected to increase, potentially pushing him further down the pecking order and opening the door for an exit.

According to Football Insider, Celtic are ready to be ruthless in reshaping their squad after a disappointing return from their current forward options this season. That approach could leave Kenny among those moved on.

The Irish forward was given a short opportunity in the first team under Martin O’Neill earlier in the campaign, but a run of missed chances saw him lose his place. He was subsequently loaned out to Bolton Wanderers in January, where he has made a promising start with one goal and three assists in six appearances.

A permanent move to Bolton could be a realistic outcome if both sides decide to pursue it, especially given how comfortable he appears to be in England.

Kenny eager to prove himself

Despite the uncertainty, Kenny has made it clear he wants to prove himself at Celtic when he returns. Speaking recently, he described playing regularly for the club as his “dream” — though whether that opportunity still exists remains unclear.

While a comeback cannot be completely ruled out, time may not be on his side. Kenny is under contract until 2029, meaning Celtic are under no immediate pressure to sell and could still keep him if there’s belief in his development.

Ironically, he could find himself as the only recognised striker left by the end of the season, with several current options expected to depart. However, that situation may not last long.

Celtic are already exploring replacements, with Hearts forward Claudio Braga reportedly high on their shortlist in a deal that could cost around £5 million. The club are also monitoring young talent Ali Avila, while additional options — including links to Portsmouth — continue to emerge as they plan a major rebuild up front.
