Stephen McGowan Names Who’s to BLAME for Celtic’s Season Collapse After 2-0 Tannadice Defeat

Posted on March 23, 2026

Celtic’s injury crisis has taken most of the spotlight this season, but the reality is far less forgiving   much of the damage has been self-inflicted.
The warning signs were evident early. Jota was already expected to miss a significant portion of the campaign before the summer window even opened, while Cameron Carter-Vickers required surgery.

In most well-run clubs, those setbacks would have triggered immediate reinforcements. Celtic, however, failed to act decisively.

Instead, key attacking players such as Nicolas Kühn and Adam Idah were allowed to leave without being properly replaced. By the time the transfer window closed, the squad already looked thin and unbalanced.

The late move for Kelechi Iheanacho  a player available after his contract was terminated elsewhere — appeared more like a reactive decision than part of a structured plan. His delayed return to the starting XI, making his first start since December only recently, underlines how disjointed Celtic’s recruitment strategy has been.

Loan Signings Fail to Deliver

Joel Mvuka, brought in with the expectation of filling Kühn’s role, has struggled to make any real impact. Since arriving, he has managed just one start, along with a brief extra-time appearance against Rangers.

Similarly, the January loan additions have done little to improve performances, further fuelling supporter frustration.

McGowan Delivers Brutal Verdict

Writing in The Herald, Stephen McGowan offered a scathing assessment of Celtic’s situation:

“While injuries to key players have clearly affected the team, much of the damage is self-inflicted. Complacency, the sale of key goal scorers, and the recruitment of underwhelming replacements have all contributed.

The failure to invest in a reliable, consistent striker has left the manager constantly searching for solutions up front  hoping something will eventually click.”

It is a harsh critique, but one that reflects the growing concerns surrounding the club’s decision-making both on and off the pitch.

Uncertain Road Ahead

With the title race tightening and momentum slipping away, attention is already turning to the summer window. Celtic are in clear need of a defined strategy to rebuild and strengthen the squad.

However, after a season marked by questionable decisions and missed opportunities, confidence among supporters remains low. The choices made in the coming months could shape not only the manager’s future but the club’s direction for years to come.

For now, the sense is unmistakable   history may be repeating itself, and this time, the fans are watching closely.
