Newcastle United exploit ‘housekeeping’ loophole to net £106.5m financial boost

Newcastle United exploit ‘housekeeping’ loophole to net £106.5m financial boost.

Companies House documents show Newcastle United’s owners have injected fresh cash into the club.

The Toon hierarchy have issued one share – which has a face value of five pence – for £106.5million. At the same time, Newcastle’s parent company, PZ Newco Ltd, have issued millions of shares.

This “housekeeping” loophole allows for PIF and the Reubens to keep their 85 per cent / 15 per cent split while adding cash for operating costs. Newcastle used the same method three times last year to inject £15million, £35million and £37million.

Allocating shares – rather than a loan – prevents the club from falling into debt. Football financial guru Kieran Maguire shared the update from Companies House on social media.

Newcastle United finances

Speaking in March, former Newcastle CEO Darren Eales – who left the club earlier this month – highlighted the current financial position. He said: “We are committed to sustainable success and we have started 2025 in a strong position.

“Our progress has been supported by diligent work on and off the pitch. Returning to the Champions League for the first time in more than 20 years was hugely memorable for everyone connected with the club, and it has clear upside financially as we continue to grow.

“We grew our revenues by 28 per cent in the twelve months to 30 June 2024, with an increase in matchday revenue as well as significantly improved sponsorship deals and a sharper focus on everything we are doing across the club.

We continue to make significant strides with our commercial deals and matchday offerings as we strengthen the foundations of the long-term project here at Newcastle United.”

‘Controlled by PSR’ – Eddie Howe

“We’re controlled by PSR,” Howe said last month when reflecting on Newcastle’s position. “That’s still limiting what we can do and that’s the reality.

I’ve said many times, we’re not the highest payers in the league. We’re far from it and that is sometimes reflected in the choices players make.

“I don’t think there’s many players who have come here and haven’t benefitted from the experience Newcastle can give you.

Playing in front of these supporters, that’s an absolute privilege and an honour that’s never lost on me. It’s a special place to be. Some players have a different choice. Finances play a part in that.”
