Martin O’Neill confirms Arne Engels is on track to return after the international break

Posted on March 25, 2026 by Jsport

Celtic have received a significant lift in their pursuit of the Scottish Premiership title, with record signing Arne Engels edging closer to a return from injury at a crucial stage of the season.
Manager Martin O’Neill has confirmed that the 22-year-old midfielder is expected to be available shortly after the international break.

The Belgian has been sidelined since sustaining a thigh injury against Livingston last month, and his absence has been notably felt in Celtic’s midfield.

Providing a positive update, O’Neill revealed that Engels has resumed training, spent time recovering at home, and is now set to undergo specialist work in Belgium.

The manager expressed confidence in his return timeline, suggesting the midfielder could rejoin the squad in time to make a meaningful impact during the decisive run-in.

O’Neill also challenged Engels to add greater attacking output to his game, emphasizing that an increased goal contribution could significantly elevate his importance to the team during the title push.

With just seven league fixtures remaining, Celtic currently sit on 61 points from 31 matches—five behind leaders Hearts and two adrift of Rangers. The margins are tight, leaving little room for error as the race intensifies.

Engels’ return could prove pivotal. Prior to his injury, he demonstrated composure, creativity, and energy in central areas—qualities Celtic have missed in recent weeks.

A fully fit Engels, alongside the potential availability of key figures such as Callum McGregor and Alistair Johnston, would significantly strengthen O’Neill’s options heading into the final stretch.

In what has been a highly competitive and unpredictable campaign, Celtic must quickly rediscover top form following the international break if they are to reclaim the initiative. Engels’ return may arrive at exactly the right moment.
