Colby Donovan has been forced to withdraw from the Scotland under-21 squad after sustaining a knee injury during Celtic’s 2-0 defeat to Dundee United.
The young right-back had been filling in due to Julian Araujo’s absence, with the loanee returning to Bournemouth for treatment. However, Donovan picked up a knock while attempting to deliver a cross. Despite receiving treatment on the pitch, he was unable to continue and was replaced by Luke McCowan.
As a result, Donovan will now miss Scotland’s upcoming under-21 fixtures against the Czech Republic and Portugal. The focus will shift to his recovery during the international break, though Celtic supporters will be concerned about whether he will be fit in time for the trip to Dundee on April 5.
Araujo is still expected to be unavailable when domestic football resumes, while Alistair Johnston, although back in training, is not yet ready for matchday action. If Donovan is also sidelined, Celtic could once again face defensive reshuffling — a situation that raised eyebrows when Reo Hatate was deployed at right-back against Dundee United.
Further updates are expected from the club in the coming days, with fans eagerly awaiting news on Donovan’s condition.
What Happens If Donovan Isn’t Fit?
If Donovan is ruled out — and with Johnston and Araujo still unavailable — Anthony Ralston is likely to step in.
Ralston featured briefly in the 3-1 victory over Motherwell, delivering a composed and reliable performance. While not the most attacking option, he remains a dependable presence and could be called upon until first-choice players return.
His last start came in January’s 3-1 defeat to Rangers, where he played 88 minutes. During that match, he won the majority of his ground duels and made several key defensive contributions.
Attention will now turn to manager Martin O’Neill’s next press conference, where updates on Donovan, Johnston, and Araujo are expected. Supporters will be hoping for positive news as the season approaches a crucial stage.
