Celtic will be without captain Callum McGregor for this weekend’s Premiership clash against Motherwell.
Concerns about the midfielder’s availability began earlier in the week when he was absent from training at Lennoxtown. The manager has now confirmed that McGregor will not be part of the squad for the match at Celtic Park.
Calf strain confirmed after missed training
McGregor’s absence from training sessions quickly sparked speculation among supporters about whether he would be fit in time for the upcoming fixture.
That uncertainty has now been resolved.
Manager Martin O’Neill confirmed that the Celtic captain is currently dealing with a calf strain, meaning he will not be able to take part in the game against Motherwell.
Why McGregor’s absence is important
McGregor plays a central role in the way Celtic operate in midfield.
He often drops deep to collect possession from the defensive line before helping move the ball forward into attacking areas. This allows Celtic to control the pace of the game and stretch opposition teams across the pitch.
Without him in the lineup, another player will need to take on the responsibility of dictating the tempo and linking defence with attack.
The role requires more than accurate passing. The player in that position must also react quickly when possession is lost and help protect the space in front of the centre backs.
O’Neill explains the injury
Speaking about McGregor’s condition, O’Neill moved to clear up speculation and stressed that the injury is unrelated to the problem the midfielder had last season.
He told The Herald:
“Callum will miss the game.
It is a calf strain. My physio mentioned it to me this morning. There have been rumours suggesting it could be something else but it is not related to that. Last season he had an Achilles injury, this time it is simply a calf issue.
I am hopeful. He has been doing well with his recovery and we are optimistic he could be available again next week.”
Possible return next week
Despite missing this weekend’s fixture, there are positive signs regarding McGregor’s recovery.
The Celtic captain could potentially return in time for the club’s next league match.
The Hoops are scheduled to face Dundee United next Sunday, which gives McGregor additional time to regain full fitness.
Celtic must cope without their captain
In the meantime, Celtic will have to find a midfield solution without their most influential player.
Someone else will need to step into the deeper role and help progress the ball out from defence while maintaining control of the game.
McGregor’s composure, awareness and ability to move play forward quickly often become even more noticeable when he is not on the pitch.
If his recovery continues to progress well, however, his absence may only be temporary.
